Family history

I don’t know if it’s the common last name or something else, but I’ve been interested in family history for a long time. Mostly, the Smith side. It seems the most difficult to track down (and is) and my grandfather, Eston Smith, died when I was 5, so I barely remember him. Plus, ancestry.com has opened up all of its war records until D-Day.

So, I have found that I am (allegedly) related to a few famous people. From my mother’s side of the family:
• Doc Holliday (sixth cousin, three-times removed): I was pretty excited about this one!
• Humphrey Bogart (eighth cousin) Humphrey Bogart!
• Emmett Ashford, the first black MLB umpire (seventh cousin, three times removed)

And from my father’s mother’s side (the non-Smiths), who just seem to be claiming everyone they can:
• First ladies Margaret Mackall Smith Taylor (second cousin, seven-times removed), Lucy Ware Webb Hayes (fifth cousin, five-times removed), Ida Saxton McKinley (seventh cousin, four times removed), Ellen Louise Axson Wilson (eighth cousin, twice removed), Florence Kling Harding (seventh cousin, four times removed) and Lou Henry Hoover (seventh cousin, four times removed)
• Presidents Zachary Taylor (second cousin, 10-times removed), James Garfield (sixth cousin, five times removed) and Ronald Reagan (eighth cousin, three times removed)
• Inventors Orville Wright (fifth cousin, four-times removed) and Eli Whitney (fifth cousin, seven times removed)
• John Allerton, Mayflower passenger (13th great grand uncle)
• Authors Oliver Wendell Holmes (fourth cousin, seven-times removed), Ray Bradbury (second cousin, seven times removed), Henry David Thoreau (seventh cousin, three times removed), Clement Moore (fifth cousin, seven times removed) and Agatha Christie (10th cousin)
• Georgia O’Keefe, painter (seventh cousin, twice removed)
• Robert Laird Borden, Canadian prime minister (seventh cousin, three times removed)
• Walt Whitman, poet (sixth cousin, six times removed)
• Shirley Temple (eighth cousin, three times removed)
