Newspapers that Twitter: August numbers

Most reporters, editors, etc., who use Twitter have discovered it can be a great reporting tool. Anchors at CNN are finding that to be true too: @ricksanchezcnn joined Twitter in August. He began to promote social networking when he was on the air, also including Facebook and MySpace. He now has more than 6,000 followers on Twitter, and is following more than 4,500 people. He often mentions and shows Twitter and Facebook posts on the air, and answers questions that followers ask. (Sanchez also says a “Twitter show” will debut Monday.) His colleague @donlemoncnn joined Twitter on Sept. 3, and within a couple of hours has more than 400 followers and is following more than 300 people. Other cable news anchors and reporters are sure to follow. (Dear @andersoncooper: Stop using Twitterfeed and actually post things, and your numbers will skyrocket, too.)

But TV — especially 24-hour TV — allows for a more immediate reaction than newspapers can provide, right? Wrong. Evidently you’re not following @coloneltribune (Chicago Tribune) and @statesman (Austin American-Statesman). @coloneltribune recently picked up a tip from a Twitter follower about a bomb threat, and was able to share information through Twitter and the Tribune’s Web site.

When Hurricane Gustav was heading toward New Orleans, the @gustavreporter (Chicago Tribune) and @trackinggustav (Statesman) were on top of it. With hurricane-specific accounts and reports from Louisiana. (Notice a trend? Those papers get it.) Statesman Internet editor Robert Quigley said @trackinggustav received 6,500+ page views directly related to his Twitter posts.

All of this re-affirms four things:
1. Newspapers can and should participate in social media.
2. Participating means not just throwing headlines at your readers, but following them and listening to what’s going on.
3. With Twitter, newspapers can make and break news just as quick — if not quicker — as the competition.
4. Twitter can drive traffic to your site.

By popular demand, I took a (quick) look at how newspapers are updating their Twitter accounts. Based on each account’s last 20 updates (or one page), 175 of the 347 accounts that were updated in August are strictly using Twitterfeed to update; 163 are using the Web (which includes texting and third-party Web-based applications); nine are using other means or a combination of Twitterfeed and Web updates. The number of Web-updated accounts was higher than I expected, but most of those are accounts used by reporters, editors and other newsroom personnel.

Here’s a closer look at the 387 newspaper Twitter accounts (84 more than last month). On average, each account as 190.83 followers.

Do you know of a newspaper that is using Twitter but isn’t on the list? Tell me about it.

Take a look at numbers from July.

43 comments and counting

Interesting. I probably subscribe to over a dozen newspapers or TV stations Tweets. They vary quite a lot in what they deem important news and how quickly they get it out online.

Ironically, the fastest news service, even for U.S. news, is Breaking News On out of the Netherlands but they sometimes don’t check their stories for accuracy and have to retract bulletins they’ve posted.

I love the fact that twitter can allow local news bubble up. It gives the readers a sense of community with their local news outlets, as well as let news outlets know what’s important to the community. Beautiful list. It must have taken forever to aggregate, and I am really appreciative of the work you put in to it. It be nice if some of these papers would stop using twitterfeed and let a live person man the tweets.

Oh, for god’s sake, SF Chronicle *facepalm* It’s almost embarassing to live here. I grew up reading the Chronicle and occasionally look at it online now or over my girlfriend’s shoulder (in paper form), and it’s just ridiculous that a paper with such an active and actively-used website, in the heart of the freaking Bay Area where everything is online, can’t update its damn Twitter feed.

No Wired.com reporters or editors? We’ve got tons of people on Twitter: @dylan20, @alexismadrigal, @jennydeluxe, @evanh2002, @bxchen, etc.

A lot of our blogs have Twitter accounts, too: Gadget Lab, Underwire.

    Great list though!

The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville, Fl (@jaxdotcom) has been tweeting with a slight obsession for about two months, and we’re up to 283 followers.

Twitter was perfect for Tropical Storm Fay when she came through - we pushed out a lot of info to Twitter, and got a lot of amazing info from our followers. At several points we used pics/video/text from our Twitter followers on the front page of Jacksonville.com as the storm blew through town.

We love it b/c we get to talk to our audience, and our audience talks to us.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy (@philanthropy) has had tremendous success with Twitter.

We’re posting headlines, for sure, but we’re also using it to pose questions, find sources, and monitor what’s on the mind of folks in the world of philanthropy.

I find that we’re connecting with a new audience (554 followers and growing fast) and we’re also much better able to find out what is on the minds of folks in our niche.

The key is to make it a two-way conversation tool. We’re not just talking to folks. We’re listening.

There are quite a few more employees of the Houston Chronicle than you have listed on this post. You can get a good list of Houston Chronicle Twitter accounts here.

    Great list, by the way!

  10. Erica Smith   /   September 5, 2008    #

Just to clarify, these are newspapers and newspaper reporters that use Twitter. I’m going to have to leave it to someone else to start tracking magazines — thanks for the info on @wired and @eonline.

I am also trying to limit this to reporters, editors, etc., who use Twitter for work, too. (Locked accounts are difficult to use for work, so I’m not including them.) I work for a paper, but I don’t use Twitter for work, so my name’s not on the list, but co-worker Adam Jadhav — who did a fantastic job covering the Democratic and Republican national conventions — is on there. Keep sending me names of newspaper reporters that use Twitter! (Also let me know if you don’t use Twitter for work and want your name taken off the list.)

@Liz: I stopped following @breakingnewson because of all of the retractions. I love to be among the first to know about breaking news, I just want it to be accurate.

@Daysha and @Danica: I found two more San Francisco Chronicle accounts on Twitter last night: @philbronstein and @sfchron_sports, which are regularly updated. Maybe there’s hope that the paper will come back to @sfchron_alert?

@Jonathan: Thanks for the tip on @jaxdotcom! It’s been added.

In the past two days I have also added:
Austin American-Statesman: @lorichawkins and @trackinggustav has been changed to @digitaljournals

    @sonecessary, @digitalslob, @parkzplatz, @erikaengle

Thanks for doing this reporting, compiling this chart, etc. Great job!

  14. Robert Quigley   /   September 6, 2008    #

Once again, Erica, great job! (I’m not just saying this because you named me).

Newspapers (and other media) that use Twitterfeed excessively should think twice. You’re missing a huge opportunity at a time when we should be looking for every possible opportunity to connect with readers.

  15. Mark Drapeau   /   September 6, 2008    #

Could one now argue, with use of blogs, Twitter, etc., that there is “no such thing as a local newspaper”?

I ask because it seems like all kinds of previously local stories can now be told cheaply to a world audience. Why can’t the blog stories on, say, a storm be just as great as the NYT’s equivalent story? And why can’t it go “more viral”?

    Food for thought.

@Erika: Honolulu Star-Bulletin colleagues added! Thanks!

@Robert: Agreed. I haven’t seen CNN’s new Twitter show (but since I’m a huge nerd, I TiVo’d it!), but I hope some folks can learn from what they and folks like you and @coloneltribune are doing. (I owe the Colonel for finally teaching me how to spell c-o-l-o-n-e-l. Finally.)

@Mark: There’s no reason a blog post can’t be just as great as a story! None! And they should be viral. It’s just taking newspapers a long, long time to come around to that way of thinking.

@Baratunde: @theonion had 1,936 followers on Aug. 6 and 2,733 followers on Sept. 1. That’s a 41.17 percent increase — most from Twitterfeed. Not enough of an increase to break the top 10, but it has more followers than USA Today’s @popcandy.

One major flaw with Twitter: Bad customer support. Soon someone is going to take advantage of the situation, and many people will be fooled with false messages.

Of course, the newsroom response will be the usual: “We couldn’t have known!”

  35. Stephanie Romanski   /   September 16, 2008    #

I think using Twitterfeed is a good start for papers just getting into Twitter, and are not sure of the value of it. At the very least, it’s a way to push updates to people who want to get them on their cells without having to pay a third-party vendor to do the same thing. It also is a free way to make your paper look good by offering up something like this.

But once you get past that, it’s time to explore its uses. My paper began with pushing out updates via Twitterfeed. As I get my newsroom interested in Twitter (an uphill battle here) I intend to use Yahoo pipes to push out their ‘live’ tweets, mixed with the regular Twitterfeed updates.

And while we’ve always used Twitterfeed, we have also always mixed it with live updates from a real person (mostly me), especially on breaking news or special announcements.

I just wanted to defend Twitterfeed a little :)
