On Thursday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel added a Web job to the Tribune job board:

Finally, on Friday, Hall released an “update” memo saying jobs had been cut, and Greenberg returned a call to Editor & Publisher to say the same thing, and hinted that layoffs would also be coming to other departments. Greenberg said newspaper management planned to make an announcement at the end of the month after all cuts had been made. But the Sentinel still hasn’t publicized the 45 human resources, marketing and technology jobs that were eliminated in March.

And no one is saying anything about layoffs being made at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel either.

Sun-Sentinel employees were told about 20 percent of the newsroom will be laid off, but newspaper leaders have not released information to the public.

On Friday, the first two newsroom employees — reporters a reporter and investigations editor Joe Demma who were starting vacations today — were told they were being laid off. The rest of the layoffs will be made this week. Also on Friday, 11 pressmen were laid off.

Air and sea show. The beach, the ocean, the sun. A cookout. Christina Aguilera concert. Elbo Room. And that was just one day! There was also fireworks, underwear parties, street parties, great restaurants, a tour of the Sun-Sentinel, bombing raids and a lot of sun.

There is really no way to top those four days in Fort Lauderdale.

OK, since I’ve been very nerdy lately (Hello, I just professed my love for a computer program. It doesn’t get much nerdier than that.), I should admit that I signed up for Twitter. So that I can get news alerts IM’d to me. (I tried to warn you.) CNN isn’t very good at it — but it’s not run by anyone actually with CNN either. New York Times does a good job, although it’s not always timely — usually just their top stories. Reuters is pretty good. BBC is the best and most timely, but the international news isn’t always as appealing as national/local news. So why aren’t more papers doing this? I even found a program that takes your RSS feed and converts it to twits — it can’t get much easier, right? I’m tempted to try it with the Post-Dispatch feeds, just to make sure. Because really, who doesn’t have RSS feeds now? (That answer is coming up, actually.) Chicago Sun-Times does. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel even has a breaking news feed. Love it.

Now, who doesn’t have RSS feeds? The Times. Which brings us to confession time. Talking to Yuri today, I suggested The Times start Twittering — I even went so far as to give them the address (after making sure it was available). Folks at The Times had not heard of Twitter yet. (How is it that I’m on the cutting edge? This is strange.) Yuri signed up and did take it a step farther, adding a NWI/Twitter promo to the Web site; so far they have two followers.

While I’m on the Twitter tangent, there are all kinds of fun things that can be done with it:
• Twittervision: See twits as they’re sent, plotted on a Google map. “A savvy journalist might watch Twittervision during a crisis for leads or eyewitnesses.”
• Twitterment: Search and compare what people are Twittering about.
• Twitterverse: Shows and weighs what people are Twittering over the last hour, five hours, 10 hours and day.
I’ll get over Twitter now, I swear.

Boris Yeltsin died Monday. I did a Google search, preparation for an A1 shift, for Yeltsin-St. Louis ties and came across a band, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, from St. Louis. Evidently I wasn’t the only one to find ‘em: “Comments mourning the death of the former Russian leader have been flooding onto the page of an indie rock bad [sic] called “Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.” No sign of an official response from the band.”

There’s an interesting push (and by push, I mean there are three) among newspapers to hire news programmers. What a great idea. I’m impressed that The News Tribune is among those papers. Now if only I remembered more programming.

I keep singing at work … and people keep giving me dirty looks. And I have the giggles. This was pretty common at The Times. It’s something I’ve done several times, without a doubt. The environment is a little different at professional newspapers though …

Need a unique alarm clock? You can chase Clocky around the room. The video on their site (it’s a commercial) isn’t great … but this one’s funny.

I love The Edge. I never remember to look for it, though, (now it’s bookmarked), but when I stumble across it (or when Kevin sends me a link), I’m always impressed. And entertained. This week’s topic: beer. Now I know how to properly pour and what kind of glasses to use.

Christine sent me a text because she was watching “The Paper” with folks from the paper — in this case, The Times. It is one of my favorite movies. In fact, I had to dig out the DVD so I could watch it, too. It’s also one of the few journalism movies to have designers. This is my favorite scene.

Kevin’s predicting tomorrow’s news again: The pumps installed around New Orleans to protect the town from massive flooding (again) are faulty. Of course … the pumps were made … in Deerfield Beach, Fla.! In … Broward County!

• Tennessee has a new commercial, featuring Dolly Parton and Elvis Presley. It bothers me that Dolly’s hair doesn’t blow in the wind, but Elvis’s does.

• Forget the dollar-coins without “In God we trust.” There’s at least one that doesn’t have anything printed on the flat sides … but does have “In God we trust.” Thank goodness. I think the mint did this on purpose. Great marketing … Everyone wants those coins now.
• CHI-TONW tattoos? Yep, the misspelling is intentional. Well, now it is.
• There’s an underground railroad bike route. But the story doesn’t have a map — and should. I found one.
• Sunny Lane is a porn star whose parents help manage her career.

Kevin’s centerpiece today was on breast milk — a different twist on the debate. Moms with too much breast milk can freeze it and send it to a milk bank in South Africa for orphans and babies with HIV-positive mothers. (Milk banks have not been set up in the United States.)

A video appeared on YouTube on Valentine’s Day of a guy quite publicly breaking up with his girlfriend. There was speculation at the time that it might have been a hoax. Guess what. It was.

I don’t get Second Life. I understand what it is … but I don’t understand the allure. About a month ago I read that Ball State has classes on Second Life. Odd. Then today, Kevin pointed out that Reuters is hiring for its “Second Life Team.” I’m curious what Reuters is doing, though. And evidently the Bakersfield Californian has bought Second Life space, too.

Kevin also pointed out that the South Florida Sun-Sentinel is hiring reporters for a two-year residency program. Applicants are expected to speak Spanish or Creole. The lead 1A/special projects designer was named the business design team leader, too, so a design position may be opening up.

Dentists scare the heck out of me. I don’t know why; I also don’t know why they wouldn’t. But a story about a boy who died from a toothache … well, that scared me even more.

My A1 had a nice mention today on Best Front Design. (Woo-hoo!) I don’t put a lot of stock in Alan Jacobson’s opinions really — we don’t agree on many views. So perhaps I’m happiest that my page wasn’t picked, yet several designers said it should have been the page of the day. Visual Editors has now launched its own version, Best Front Page. The difference? Designers post their own pages, and are responsible for commenting on the pages that have been posted. And no chance to win $1,000 and Quark …

There was an 8,000 gallon toxic chemical spill on the Ohio River near Brookport, Ill., and Paducah, Ky. Never good. The spill isn’t that toxic, as far as toxic spills go, to humans.

On a health hazard rating of 0 – 3 cumene (1-methylethylbenzene) registers 1.2. A score of 3 represents a very high hazard to health, 2 represents a medium hazard and 1 is harmful to health.
On an environmental rating of 0 – 3 cumene (1-methylethylbenzene) registers 1.0. A score of 3 represents a very high hazard to the environment and 0 a negligible hazard.

It won’t be good for aquatic life and birds, though. Speaking of Ohio River fish:

The world record for the largest blue catfish taken in the line class (104 lbs.), was set on the Ohio River in 1999.

I was not at all surprised to learn that people who connect to the Internet wirelessly are more likely to “do more online.”

You know, at first they were very cool. Quite innovative. But now those page-turn Internet ads are everywhere.

Interesting story: A high school student insulted another by saying “That’s so gay.”

Those three words landed the high school freshman in the principal’s office and resulted in a lawsuit that raises this question: When do playground insults used every day all over America cross the line into hate speech that must be stamped out?

Kevin: “That story was gay.”

Evidently size does matter. To mice. And just when you think it isn’t a story about sex or penises … it is. In related animal news, “Gay animals out of the closet.” And for a third animal sex story: “More pet lovers banking dog sperm.”

Britney Spears’ official Web site is doing … something. Not sure what, though.

McDonald’s has launched a new Web commercial for its filet-o-fish.

Perhaps the reason behind the decline in newspaper sales is lack of energy. This kid sells up to 400 papers each Sunday.

And, in perhaps the best story of the day, drunk texting. I know I’m guilty of it. I know others are guilty of send them my way. Come on, we can all relate.
