Charlotte weekly paper stops printing

Posted: Today at 4:02 a.m.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte’s politically conservative free weekly will stop publishing after six years and continue as an Internet-only publication.

Rhinoceros Times editor Mark Pellin said rising production costs and falling advertising forced the move. He told The Charlotte Observer Thursday that six of the paper’s eight employees have been laid off.

Pellin said readership remains strong, even if sales aren’t.

He said the online publication will continue to focus on civic and government issues.

Charlotte’s edition was a spinoff of the Greensboro-based Rhinoceros Times, owned by Hammer Publications Inc., which will continue to publish.
